A Harry Potter Christmas

2 min read

This year, we traded tinsel and garlands for wands and glowing potions as we hosted a Harry Potter-themed Christmas dinner (friendsmas!). Our home was transformed into Hogwarts, brimming with DIY props, enchanting decor, and an air of festive wonder.

The Setup: Turning Home into Hogwarts

As guests stepped into our living room it was as if they were transported into the Great Hall with the hanging candles (thank you, fishing wire and LED lights!). We added a candy trolley reminiscent of the one from the Hogwarts Express, overflowing with treats.

The dining table became a scene straight out of the Great Hall of Hogwarts, featuring a Marauder's Map centerpiece, glowing candles, vintage spell books, potion bottles crafted from recycled jars, and a chocolate frog or golden snitch on each plate- a sweet surprise for every guest.

The Feast: A Christmas Banquet

On the menu was a spread inspired by the Hogwarts Christmas Feast: shepherd’s pie, pork roast, giant chicken drumsticks, and roasted vegetables. For dessert, we indulged in warm apple pie, Hagrid’s famous homemade birthday cake and butterbeer, exactly how it is served in Hogsmeade. Each dish brought the magical cuisine of the wizarding world to life, we were all definitely very full afterwards.

The Fun: Triwizard Tournament

No gathering at "Hogwarts" would be complete without some magical games. We kicked things off by first sorting each couple into house. Once that was sorted the mini Triwizard Tournament began, starting with a Harry Potter trivia contest where teams earned points for their house. Next, guests had to drink the mysterious black potion (grass jelly) to “Find the Slytherin Locket”, we even included some decoys to trick everyone . The evening ended with a spirited round of Quidditch beer pong, which had everyone cheering and laughing because of how difficult I made it (sorry!).

Why It's Worth it

This wasn’t just a dinner party; it was an experience- a way to bring people together, celebrate the festive season, and create memories together. Seeing the joy on everyone’s faces, hearing their laughter, and sharing in the enchantment reminded us why hosting is such a meaningful art. It’s not about perfection- it’s about connection and creativity.

Your Turn to Bring the Magic

Feeling inspired? You can host your own Harry Potter-themed gathering! Start small with simple DIY decor, encourage guests to dress up, and let the magic unfold. Whether it's for a birthday, Halloween, or next Christmas, you’ll create memories your guests will cherish.
